Funny Shirts/ Pizza/Focus

I haven't really posted it much since Florida. I have over a little over a month till i race at Buffalo Springs 70.3 so i had a good week of recover last weekend with some light training, and a great group ride called the Honey Tour on the Memorial Day weekend. A fun ride that was 60miles at 25mph or faster that eventually left myself and another rider all by ourselves for a long time. The ironic part of the Honey tour was i got stung by a wasp or what i called a Bee that flew down my jersey. Oh well regardless it was a great ride that left Chance and i bonking in IHOP waiting for our meals, my veggie omelet wasn't worth the wait but Chances Steak Omelet that was bigger than i was looked amazing. SO i slept a lot last weekend, and this week I have started ram ping up the training, not much to tell, but swim/bike/run repeat, working on stroke efficiency and strength over the next weeks on the bike as well as allot of hill training in hot weather. Buffalo Springs is a very hilly and hot course that i would like to be prepared for. The key word of the Month will be "Focus". Its easy to stay focused when away at a training camp or there is a big race in two weeks, but its hard when your next race is a little ways away. Its easy to say tomorrow i will stop eating M&M's the race isn't for another month. But over the next month i will try and focus and show up on the start line as ready as i can be with no excuses.

So while i am on the topic of eating healthy, i have found an amazing franchise that if i had the money to purchase i would put it down the street, however the idea of a healthy pizza place fitting in between Americanized eating Establishments such as Whattaburger and Sonic may be difficult. Please check out http://www.pizzafusion.com/ it looks absolutely amazing however i will not hold my breath for one to come to Texas for a little whiles time.

Other great news is that i have another job this weekend other than riding my bike, i will be taking part in Brent Watches Far to Many Movies so why not write about it Critic review after watching Indiana Jones this weekend. I am sure this weekend will bring some amusing stories or at least a few pictures. Any way here are a few funny tee shirt pics that still have me shaking my head. Yes i guess my focus is not where it needs to be if i have too much time to look at stupid tee shirts.

Florida 70.3

short report, i wrote it on a flight with screaming kids, and disney music rining in my ears. I sort of ramble on a lot, i hope i didnt forget to thank anyone. Sometimes we dont say thank you enough, i can think of a few convience store owners in texas who have saved me once or twice while bonking in texas heat, when you just dont have that extra quarter to get a Dr. Pepper and the powerbar. Anyway good race, just a steping stone for season, looking forward to a good summer of training and racing a head. I will post some pictures once, i get them, and once i track down where my bike is.

Florida 70.3

Lining up on the beach in Florida I kept telling myself that I belonged. I told my self that they weren’t faster than me and I had every right to step up and race with the big boys. When the gun went off I ran in after a few dolphin dives and a few hundred meters hard, it turned into a very easy relaxed pace. After the past week swimming 20x100 sub 1:10 pace, I knew I was ready to at least hang with the leaders. Every so often I would look up and site and I would see there were 10 of us swimming comfortable. I could see Craig Alexander’s Green Cap beside me and I knew TJ was beside me on the other side. I was right where I wanted to be. I actually focused on my breathing pattern and stayed very comfortable. On the way back in I may have taken it too relaxed losing 10seconds to Bryan Rhodes and a couple of others. Coming out of the water, I hammered the run, to transition passing almost everyone; I put on my helmet and excited T1 in 3rd. Right away I rode up to the front and eventually settled into a pace. So I reached my goal of swimming with the leaders and second to make sure I was at the front before the pack got moving. A few miles, Craig passed and eventually took charge at the front. For the first 10miles I was chilling riding in 3rd-6th place depending on what was going on. There were a few out and backs and I may have been too hyper. After mile 20 I eventually calmed myself down and said it is going to be a long day if I ride too hard. After 40miles I was riding towards the back of the group, with Paul Amey (GBR), and Marcus Ornellas(BRA). I could see Craig Alexander was still working hard at the front and there was a nice pack of 10 or so riders. With two drafting motorcycles riding beside the group the whole time, the pack was evenly spaced out. Climbing one of the climbs I was riding up to close to a rider and one of the marshals told me to drop back or pass to the front. At this point in the race I dropped back and rode by myself trying to save a bit for the run, and realized there was no point killing the ride just to walk to the run. As soon as I decided to back off, I could see Paul Amey had made his move. Great work Paul! Great move and you deserve the win. At Mile 50 I could still see the lead vehicle and Courtney Ogden caught me. I knew his name from somewhere, I think he has won a few Ironmans and he helped pace me into Transition 2, regardless he was World Class. Running out of T2 Courtney and I ran together and by together I mean me looking at the sky saying, where are my running legs. I was so excited, like a kid in the candy shop because I knew Craig was 2.5 minutes up the road, and a large group of runners I knew I could catch. However, my legs weren’t there and I had to fake the run in the humidity and I ran smart so I could finish in the heat and take home a pay check.
I am very happy with my riding and my swimming, and before I used to come down 15 minutes or so off the bike behind World Class Athletes such as Craig Alexander and the lead groups, but this time i was less than 2minutes averaging 25mph and change with a 2:12 bike split. Out the run, I had lots of encouragement, from spectators, but at each turn around, I knew Bryan Rhodes and a couple of others were with in reach, but it was all I could do to put one foot in front of the other. ¾ of the run was on grass, and a little different to run on, but it will aid in recovery for this week for sure. It actually felt more like quick sand and every lap I was sinking more and more. If it wasn’t for Dave Cracknell (Lisa Bentley’s Husband) I am not sure I would have stayed sane out there. With 1mile to go I faded and started to wonder if I was going to live. I really need to toughen up, because if I was tough I would have been under 4hours fairly easily but running the last few miles over 7mins put a damper on that.
I crossed the line in 7th with one of my best races to date, I am happy with the race but at the same time I feel I could have been on the podium or closer too it if I had played my cards right, but at the same time, I wouldn’t have been in that position if I didn’t work hard on the bike.
I earned more than a pay check at this elite race, I gained the confidence I need to break through to the next level. I feel more than confident now that I can podium at major races. It’s amazing what a little rest to the body and some hard work can do. My first few races of the year were sub par but I trained through them and built up the mental toughness I needed. After the race, I realized what racing was all about, putting out a hard effort and enjoying interesting stories from other athletes, not to mention Rhodes is a pretty funny guy and kept me laughing. I would like to congratulate, all of the racers out there, especially Mike Hay for throwing it down in the pro field at the age of 40. Mike is a great Coach and Mentor and a great friend who let me crash with him in Disney. I would also like to thank Alister for Life Sport, and I am looking forward to progressing with Life Sport and hopefully turning into a World Class athlete like the great athletes that I had the opportunity to meet and race with today. I am now going to take some recovery time, and then start to build up my fitness leading into Buffalo Springs 70.3. in a little over a month time.
Thanks for reading,

p.s
I would like to thank Chuck from Racer Mate for taking a chance on me with Compu- Trainer, as well as Jack Weiss a fantastic cycling coach, Altitude technologies, SLS compression Socks and Wicked Fast Nutrition and of course my newest Sponsor LifeSport.ca. I obviously need to thank my Great Girlfriend and parents for all of there support. I feel like I am rambling on, however I have probably missed a lot of people to thank but I do not always say thank you enough to all of the great people along the way.

Cheers,Brent

Top 10 Fast Foods in Disguise
You’re Not Fooling Anyone
Some make no qualms about it. Others (and this may be worse) market their food under the guise of health while continuing to sell the same old garbage. Sure. They may provide healthier options than the junk they typically shill. But beware. Just like the food manufacturers that made it onto our Top 10 Junk Foods in Disguise list last week these fast food joints understand that it is the pretense of health that sells - not health itself. And it’s not just individual food items marketed as the “healthy option” that we take issue with. Now we have entire restaurants that the innocent public just assumes are healthy, either because they bill themselves as such or because, hello, smoothies are health food, right…anyone…Bueller?
The following is a list of the top 10 worst offenders:
Subway – Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki
Subway…eat fresh. Subway…the way a sandwich should be. Long before Jared walked on to the scene with his slimmed down physique and big pants, Subway was promoting itself as a healthy, nutritious alternative to fast food. And yes, we’ll hand it to them: A sandwich with lean deli meats and a few veggies does beat a supersized McDonald’s meal, but once you’ve added all the extras and condiments (hello sugar-laden salad dressing!), the difference is far less staggering. Let’s examine the Sweet Onion Chicken Teriyaki, for example. It makes the list because it makes their silly list of “6 grams of fat or less.” Because fat makes you fat, right? Well, no. Weighing in at 370 calories, this six inch sub doesn’t, at least at first blush, appear to be all that terrible, until you look at the 59 grams of carbohydrates and the 19 grams of sugar. Double those figures for the foot-long. Our verdict? You’d be better off making a quick chicken salad at home!
Jamba Juice – Smoothies
It’s a drink. I’ll have one in place of a meal, it’s filled with “healthy” fruit and vegetable juices. They let me add supplements. it’s…hardly better than ice cream. Touted as a breakfast drink, the Sunrise Strawberry Smoothie includes an alluring blend of strawberries, banana, soy milk and non-fat yogurt as well as a whopping 49 grams of carbohydrates, 43 grams of which come directly from sugar! We don’t know about you, but that’s certainly not something we’d like to wake up to (or deal with at 10 am once the sugar high wears off!)
Baja Fresh – Taco Salad
We pick on Baja Fresh here only because of all the large Tex-Mex fast food chains, Baja Fresh is the one that the unassuming public is most likely to consider healthy (and taking pot-shots at Taco Bell was just to darn easy!) Either way, taco salads at most of these joints, are defined as a salad only in the loosest form possible. The no-meat tostada salad, for example, contains 1,010 calories, 98 grams of carbohydrates and 1930 mg of sodium. On the plus side, it does contain 32 grams of protein, but at this point, any attempt to call this dish nutritious is pretty much futile.
McDonald’s – Fruit and Yogurt Parfait with Granola
McDonald’s? I’m loving it, especially when I can load up on 31 grams of sugar in one, convenient 5.3 oz serving of the Fruit and Yogurt Parfait with Granola. In fact, this particular breakfast treat is so loaded with sugar, that it’s included as the second item on the ingredients list, behind only milk. Also, think you’ll be fine if you just pick the fruit out? According to the site’s nutrition information page (keep digging on the Web site and you’ll find it eventually!) the strawberries have been combined with konjac flour. For what purpose? We can only assume so that we’re “lovin’ it” even more.
Wendy’s — Baked Potato
Touted on the Wendy’s website as a “tasty way to get your veggies,” the broccoli and cheese potato consists of a “piping-hot baked potato straight from the oven topped with tender pieces of broccoli and a creamy cheese sauce.” But what does one 10 oz baked potato really give you? A whopping 320 calories and 69 grams of carbohydrate, and that’s before you “personalize it” with bacon pieces, reduced fat acidified sour cream (sounds tasty!), “Buttery Best Spread” (notice that they didn’t actually say butter) or chives (presumably where you’re getting your veggies). Sensible alternative to fries? Uhh… no. In fact, at this point, you’d probably be better off opting for the fries. After all, as they say in the campaigns, “it’s way better than fast food…it’s Wendy’s.”
Kentucky Fried Chicken – Now Trans Fat Free
Here at Mark’s Daily Apple we’re all for reducing trans fats. Really we are. In fact we think it’s actually kind of admirable that KFC has taken a stab at improving the nutrition content of some of its foods. However, when eliminating trans fats is your biggest health marketing tool, you’ve got a problem. Also, if you cast your mind back a few years ago (2003 perhaps) KFC did try to capitalize on the whole Atkins craze by positioning itself as carb-concious food…at roughly 10 grams of carbohydrates per piece.
Quiznos – Sammies
Marketed as a 200 calorie snack, these mini-sandwiches are consistently advertised – and presumably, only tasty – when laden with cheese and dressing. However, adding these extras will hike your sandwich from a manageable 200 calories to a whopping 320 calories (depending on how heavy-handed your sandwich maker is!) per morsel. Further confusing the American Public (and, we’ll admit, us too!), the advertised sammie meal includes 2 sammies and a side, boosting your calorie and carbohydrate content to well over 800 calories and approximately 100 grams of carbohydrates. Also, have you seen how small these stupid things are? It’s a snack at best…and we’re being kind here.
Noodles & Company - Noodles
They claim to be one of healthiest fast food joints in the U.S. (even going as far as to say it’s a “hamlet of health,”), but can a place that bases their dishes around noodles really be that healthy? Well, to be honest, the website is so darn confusing, we’ll probably never find out! Looking for low carb choices? They’ll guide you to a page that suggests that you “eat up, eat right, eat well and just eat already” and then suggests that you load up on protein (chicken breast, sautéed beef, organic tofu, etc) with nary a mention of what exactly you are supposed to eat these things with. Still not convinced? Let’s look at the mushroom stroganoff, which boasts savory sherry cream sauce, fresh mushrooms and parmesan with egg noodles. Be prepared folks, because you’re about to ingest a whopping 1,000 calories, 116 grams of carbohydrates and 25 grams of saturated fat. Very healthy indeed!
Starbucks – Skinnies
You gotta give Starbucks credit for pumping out (literally) sugar-free syrups, but don’t be fooled by the green aprons, ambient music and skinny label: There are still 20 grams of sugar and 230 calories in a Venti Skinny Cinnamon Dolce Latte. Granted, it’s leaps and bounds better than the traditional Cinnamon Dolce Latte, which packs a whopping 50 grams of sugar and 410 calories, but still, don’t let the skinny name fool you!
TCBY - 96% Fat Free Yogurt
We like to think that most people aren’t fooled anymore by the notion that frozen yogurt is better for you than ice cream. But TCBY would like you to think so. With all the calcium and probiotics it has to offer (not to mention being nearly fat free!) TCBY is clearly a sensible alternative to sugar laden Baskin-Robbins fare. Turns out a measly 1/2 cup of said yogurt packs in 20 grams of sugar. 1/2 cup! And how are they still using “fat free” as a selling point?!
Do you have a “healthy” fast food experience? Hit us up with a comment…

Marion Jones Down the Street

Most of my runs occur on the trinity trail, its nice limestone trails that are labeled and go for miles along the Trinity River. However to get to the trail i have a 4minute trot down taylor street and past the Fort Worth jail. I often do strides by there, and the other morning after a run doing a few strides i could here someone laughing. I am sure i know who it was now. Check this artcle out.

Florida 70.3 this weekend

Its been a week or so since my last post. This Friday i am off to Florida 70.3 where i am hoping for a top 8 finish. I have put in a lot of training since my last race the Play tri half where i was 4th in 4:09. I have also done a couple of run races since then for training and everything is coming along nicely.
Most triathletes watch a lot of movies, it is great recovery and allot of fun. Since i am currently trying to get a second job as a film critic and move up in the world i decided to talk about the last movie i watched.
"Before the Devil knows your dead". Wow that is all i can say. It is a must see. Ethan Hawke stars in this dynamite film that will defiantly rank with the years best. Basically Philip Seymour Hoffman is Andy who plays a overextended payroll executive who lures his younger brother( Ethan Hawke) into a larcenous scheme. The pair rob a suburban mom and pop jewelry store that turns out to be Andy's real mom and pop, and when the seemingly perfect crime goes awry, the damage sends them towards a shattering Climax. I would personally give the film a 4* in the Tired and Sore rating system. Meaning i watched the movie when tired and sore, so sometimes our minds are not at 100% capacity to fully judge a film. Regardless give it a try.
So between training, baking and watching movies and of course working now two jobs one at SA and the other being a film critic i have been very busy watching the stars lose and watching storms. It is storm season in Texas and surrounding areas so there has definatly been some horrible storms. Carley send me this movie about a current storm, pretty crazy stuff.

Anyways I will post after florida to let everyone know how it goes, i am training fast right now so now i need to show up and do it in a race. And if all goes well, i will have some extra energy to have some fun @ Disney World.
Happy Birthday Ryan!!

pumpkin chia power

Okay i like to bake, for anyone that enjoys baking give this recipe a try. I modified it slightly using Kamut and Spelt Flour, and i used low cal syrup instead of the regular syrup or agave nectar. This is the reason i like these muffins:
Pumpkin is loaded with an important antioxidant, beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is one of the plant carotenoids converted to vitamin A in the body. In the conversion to vitamin A, beta carotene performs many important functions in overall health. Current studies link diets rich in foods with beta-carotene to reducing the risk of certain types of cancer and protection against heart disease. Okay i didn't right that my self but they are very good and they have secret Chia Seed Power, which is an amazing seed i have used in allot of my cooking, well mostly my oatmeal in the mornings but, they tasted great, and it fueled my track session. Here is the recipe, if your like me and you like pumpkin pie, try not to dig into the pumpkin puree before you bake the cookies or you wont have enough. And another side note after reading over the ingredients i don't think i used oil, but oh well, they taste great so why fight it. Try adding in some nuts, and if your like Carley you will find a place to put a mini egg or so left over from Easter.
Good Luck.

INGREDIENTS
1 Tbsp. chia seeds, ground (use a coffee or spice grinder)
1 cup whole wheat or whole grain flour
1/2 cup white unbleached flour
2 tsp. cinnamon
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. salt
16 oz. can organic pumpkin (make sure there is only pumpkin listed on the ingredient list)
2 eggs
1?4 cup high-quality extra virgin olive oil
1 cup pure maple syrup (or 1?2 cup agave nectar or a combination of the two)
1 Tbsp. vanilla
1/2 cup of chopped walnuts or pecans, optional
Salt and pepper to taste Pre-heat oven to 350°. Mix dry ingredients together in a bowl. In a separate bowl, mix all wet ingredients. Fold the wet ingredients (fold in nuts now if you are using them) into the dry ingredients and spoon into paper-lined muffin or greased muffin tins. Bake for 25–30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle of a muffin comes out clean. Store completely cooled muffins in seal able plastic bags in the freezer.
